I have found that the most effective and easiest way to facilitate expressive language skills, while simultaneously boosting self esteem, is to offer a child choice. Not only does this simple, effortless strategy empower the child to have control over the environment, it also requires a toddler to communicate their wants/needs verbally. This sends a clear message that non-verbal communication is not an adequate way to meet their needs.
